Organisation: Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI)

Administration Volunteer

Location, BGCI Descanso House, 199 Kew Road, Richmond Surrey, TW9 3BW

Hours: Minimum of 3 days per week

Duration: Minimum 3 months

Reimbursements: Up to £10 per day travel and £3 per day lunch expenses

 

BGCI is an international conservation charity that exists to ensure the worldwide conservation of threatened plants, the continued existence of which is intrinsically linked to global issues including poverty, human well-being and climate change.  BGCI has over 700 members and associates mostly botanic gardens, arboreta and plant conservation organisations in 118 countries; we have offices in the USA, China and Russia.

 

BGCI is looking for an Administration Volunteer  to support the general running of the London office, this is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wanting to start a career in the not for profit / charity sector.  You will be joining a small ambitious conservation charity with opportunities to get involved in all aspects of the organisation. 

 

Duties will include:

Filing and office organisation:

  • Assist with the organisation of the BGCI library and reference material on Botanical Gardens
  • Assist with the reorganisation of project and fundraising files, including filing, scanning and archiving and coordinating the paper and electronic systems.
  • General office administrative support including incoming and outgoing post, general reception duties acting as first point of contact for the charity, involvement in Staff Meetings Help with preparation for BGCI Board Meetings, the 5th Global Botanic Garden Congress, and other events
  • Assist with overseas bookings, visas and accommodation as required

 Web and IT

  • Assist in writing and preparing material for the BGCI website Updating BGCI Jobs and Opportunities and Events webpage’s
  • Updating BGCI membership records

Skills and experience

This role would suit an enthusiastic individual with a passion to pursue a career in the charity sector.  BGCI is an international organisation and there are opportunities to gain experience working in a small charity carrying out routine administrative tasks to ensure the smooth running of the organisation and responding to ad-hoc demands as required. We are looking for a person with the following skills:

  • Willingness to learn and implement administrative systems
  • Good organisation skills
  • A confident communicator and team player
  • Able to work on your own initiative and manage your own work load
  • Proficient in the use of MS office Outlook, Word and Excel
  • Some experience of web editing would be an advantage or a willingness to learn
  • An interest in the environment and plant conservation

 

This role would suit someone wanting to gain experience in charity administration potentially a recent graduate, someone returning to work or someone wanting to change career.
