American Conservation Experience: Utah BLM Interpretation Internship

American Conservation Experience, a Non-Profit Conservation Corps based in Flagstaff, AZ, in partnership with the Utah State Office of the Bureau of Land Management, is currently hiring two energetic, creative, and ambitious young adult interns to join the efforts of the BLM Division of Interpretation and Resource Management. The internships will provide a wonderful opportunity to develop job skills pertaining to public education and outreach while exploring career options in the management of America’s public lands.

Start Date: August 1, 2010.

A one year commitment is required.

Compensation:  $7.25 per hour plus a housing allowance of $200 per month.

Position Description:

ACE’s Interpretation Interns will be involved in a variety of tasks to help educate the public about the meaning, the unique diversity, and the natural, cultural, and scientific values of the National Landscape Conservation System (NLCS) in Utah.   Interns will be primarily engaged in creating and revising educational materials such as brochures, graphics, and artwork, designed to help educate the public as to what the NLCS is and what the NLCS means to the citizens of Utah.  Interns will also assist in creating updates to the BLM Utah’s NLCS website, contribute to the development of signage and informational kiosks, and will take on other creative tasks as identified in the course of the program year.   The internship is intended to be multi-faceted, adaptable, and generally geared at developing a relationship between the NLCS and the general public.  Interns may also help conduct research and gather information to be used in writing Wilderness Management Plans.   The project will present an opportunity for young adults, including recent university graduates, to gain tangible skills in communication, public affairs, website development, graphic arts, and other marketable skill sets.

While deliverables such as brochures created and kiosks designed represent the final physical product of the interns’ effort, ACE’s equally important objectives are to provide opportunities for creative leadership and to instill an ethic of environmental stewardship among the young adults serving as Interpretation Interns under this project.

ACE’s Interpretative Interns will work closely with the National Land Conservation System Lead and other Public Affairs staff of the BLM in the execution of the program.  The BLM is committed to providing the most educational, rewarding, and challenging experience possible to best prepare interns for future careers in the stewardship of America’s public lands.

Locations:

One position is available working from the St. George Field Office.   St. George is located in Southwest Utah’s red rock country, about 45 minutes from Zion National Park and 2 hours North of Las Vegas.

The second position will be based out of the BLM State Office in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Qualifications:   Interns with a degree in Communications, Marketing, Graphic Design, Advertising, Public Relations and other related fields who have a strong demonstrated interest and/or education in conservation will be considered for this internship.  Excellent written and oral communication skills are a must.  Strong computer proficiency, including the use of creative software is required.  ACE is seeking creative individuals who are able to take initiative and work independently, as well as participate effectively in collaborative efforts.  A strong knowledge of Utah’s public lands is helpful, but not required.  This internship is meant to serve as a stepping stone to a career in public service and education, not merely as an interesting or rewarding way to pass a year’s time.  ACE is appropriate for positive minded people who want to improve their career opportunities through concentrated and creative effort.  Individuals with disabilities are encouraged to apply.

Ability and willingness to undergo a criminal background check is required.

To Apply:   Please email a resume and cover letter along with 3 professional references to Chris Baker at cbaker@usaconservation.org with “Utah BLM Interpretation Internship - stopdodo referred” in the subject heading of your email.  A link to a website or portfolio of your work is helpful, but not required.  Please do not send large email files.

Application Deadline:   June 20, 2010.
