Accounts and Student Finance Assistant

Responsible to:            Management Accountant and Student Finance Officer

Responsible for:           No line management responsibilities at present

Liaises with:                All other departments

Salary:                         £13,900 per annum

Hours:                          40 hours per week

Contract type:              One year fixed term (to be reviewed), subject to six month probationary period.

Job summary:

Assist in credit control and maintenance of the purchase ledger.

Credit control

·         Raise non-student sales invoices, including invoices to staff

·         Raise student invoices as required

·         Send out monthly customer statements

·         Contact non-student debtors and, in liaison with the management accountant, take follow up action as necessary

·         Assist with student debt collection as required

Expenditure

·         Assist with the purchase order system

·         Assist with credit card purchase account

·         Assist with matching invoices and delivery notes to purchase orders

·         Input purchase orders onto system when required

Other finance department responsibilities

·         Collect and distribute departmental post and deliver outgoing post

·         To attend and participate in team meetings as required

·         Other work as requested from time to time by line manager, departmental colleagues,  Budget or Management Groups

·         Assist with maintenance of student payment plans and with the administration of student loan and funding applications

Person Specification

Essential

  • A thorough, practical understanding of accounting principles and techniques
  • Experience of bookkeeping and accounting
  • Computer literate, preferably with experience of accounting software
  • Experience of providing accurate and timely information to a high standard
  • High level of numeracy
  • Good level of literacy
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills, particularly attuned to working well with non-finance staff and customers
  • Polite but firm telephone manner
  • Good team worker
  • Honest, trustworthy and reliable
  • Well organised - able to prioritise and manage own workload
  • Ability to work in a co-operative structure

Desirable

  • AAT qualified (or working towards)
  • Experience of bookkeeping in a similar-sized Finance Department
  • Experience of planning, budgeting and forecasting
  • Experience of credit control
  • Welsh speaker or learner         
  • Interest in sustainability issues
