From Winchester to Eastbourne, the South Downs National Park is a spectacular and diverse landscape, with the popular South Downs Way National Trail running along its entire length, with areas of remoteness and tranquillity contrasting with hugely popular places such as the iconic Beachy Head and Seven Sisters. Over 100,000 people live in the South Downs, with 10 million people within an hour’s travel time, which results in nearly 40 million visits to the area each year. The South Downs National Park Authority is an exciting, new organisation that aims to look after the National Park and help people learn about and enjoy the area. We also have an important role to support the local communities that live and work here. We will become fully operational in April 2011 and are looking for talented individuals to take this important work forward. We are now looking to recruit an Access & Recreation Strategy Lead to contribute to the development of the South Downs National Park Management Plan and subsequent plans for promoting understanding and enjoyment of one of Britain’s most popular landscapes. This work will require the development of strong delivery partnerships to agree a shared approach to delivering high quality access and recreation opportunities in the area. It requires an integrated approach linked to other themes of work, including landscape, cultural heritage, biodiversity, education and the rural economy. It is also essential that the opportunity to deliver a range of related benefits for people is met including areas of social exclusion and health and well-being. This will require working with a range of organisations such as Natural England, local highway authorities, special interest groups, National Health Service, land owners and farmers, communities, rangers and volunteers. This role will also work with partners to develop the Authority’s research and evidence base for the South Downs. You will have a relevant degree and/or an equivalent qualification with a number of years experience (relating to access and recreation) of developing partnership strategies, commissioning, analysing and applying relevant research to strategy development, evaluation and monitoring. If you think you can add real value to this team and find innovate ways to enhance people’s enjoyment of the area, we would like to hear from you.
