POST: Four Seasonal Assistant Reserve Managers
POST NOs: 000278 / 000279 / 000960 and 000280
LOCATION: Ynyslas Near Aberystwyth
GRADE: Band A

MAIN DUTIES

  • Control vehicle access to the reserve and parking.
  • Staff the reserve centre and shop, handling sales of leaflets, books, postcards etc, and answer queries by the public about the reserve.
  • Help deliver our educational programme, mainly involving leading teacher-supervised educational walks/activities for primary school pupils, giving introductory talks to GCSE and A level groups, and dealing with booking enquiries.
  • Lead guided walks for the public.
  • Learn about the natural history of the dunes so that correct information is given to groups and educational parties, and ensure that information is given at the correct level for the group concerned.
  • Carry out reserve patrols and day-to-day visitor management, including policing of site regulations.
  • Collect litter and carry out other cleaning duties.
  • Provide advice to visitors on site safety matters and provide first aid.
  • Assist with practical site maintenance.
  • Assist with site survey and visitor monitoring.
  • Take reasonable care for the health and safety of yourself and others and comply with all health and safety legislation as appropriate.

  • Consistently meet the standards required to fulfil the service expectations of your internal and external customers/citizens and partners.
  • Carry out other general duties as necessary.

In addition, particular duties will be the responsibility of individuals within the seasonal team:

  • In the shop: monitor stock, prepare daily accounts and banking receipts, organise season ticket sales through local post offices.
  • Prepare an end of season report.
  • Prepare work rotas and duties.
  • Maintain the schools booking system.
  • Maintain the marine aquarium.

It is impossible to allocate the amount of time spent on these projects. The weather is all-important, as is the time of year.

JOB COMPETENCIES

To be considered for these posts you will need to demonstrate on your application form the following competencies:

Essential

  1. A commitment to good customer service in our dealings with the general public.
  2. A knowledge of natural history and practical countryside management skills.
  3. Good interpersonal and teamworking skills.
  4. Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  5. The ability to deliver talks and lead guided walks.
    - The ability to currently and legally drive a car in the UK.
  6. An awareness of Welsh culture, and a positive attitude to linguistic and cultural diversity.
    - Posts 000278, 000279 and 000960: The ability to use basic Welsh conversational phrases (eg ‘bore da’ – ‘good morning’) and to pronounce Welsh place names correctly.
    - Post 000280: Fluency in spoken Welsh.

Desirable

  1. A working knowledge of first aid.
  2. Access to some form of private transport (due to lack of public transport in the area).
  3. Knowledge of coastal ecology.
  4. An interest in providing outdoor educational activities for schools.

SALARY

The starting salary will be pro-rata to £14,671.00 a year.

HOURS

You will be required to work 37 hours a week. At peak periods more time will be spent keeping the centre open longer into the early evening. The centre is kept open seven days a week throughout the season and you will be required to work most weekends with two days off during the week.

There is an entitlement of 14 days annual leave plus 6 days public & privilege holidays for the 29 weeks of this appointment. This total of 20 days leave will normally have to be taken outside of school holiday periods and you will normally be required to work on bank holidays.

STATUS

These are fixed-term, pensionable full-time appointments, running from 11 March 2013 until 27 September 2013.

You must be available for five days training during the week commencing 11 March 2013.
