Description

Our interns are characterised by their energy and enthusiasm. You’ll have the ability to pick things up quickly, a can-do attitude and a passion and pride in what you do. You’ll work hard and learn fast. In return, you will be equipped with all the skills and experiences they need to build a career in this fast and exciting area of campaigning. You’ll also be a valued member of our friendly, close-knit office team.

At 38 Degrees we pride ourselves on nimble, focused campaigns that we’re more likely to put together in two hours than two weeks. That means our team is decisive, ambitious and happy to take risks. We’d rather aim high and see what happens, than play it safe. We’re passionate about putting 38 Degrees members first – we believe democracy works better when more people get involved.

ROLE

  • Work alongside the 38 Degrees campaigns staff in every aspect of planning and running our people-powered campaigns.
  • Lead on specific campaigns and particular areas of work.
  • Develop your strategic and practical understanding of delivering campaigns, as well as acquiring highly-transferable technical and communications skills.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

All candidates must have some experience of campaigning, and ideally will be able to show the impact of their contribution. This experience doesn’t need to come from paid work, it can be from work that you have done on a voluntary basis or in your own community.

You must also:

  • Be passionate about the issues that 38 Degrees works on, including protecting public services, campaigning for social justice, making our tax and banking systems fairer and protecting the environment.
  • Have a desire to learn how campaigning works and how to use people power to make change happen.
  • Be energetic with a flexible can-do attitude, and ready to work hard alongside everyone on our tight-knit team.
  • Have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, enabling you to work well with other team members and ask for help when it’s needed.
  • Have the ability to apply attention to detail and concentration in busy surroundings, whether the job is big or small.
  • Have the ability to work proactively and independently, meet deadlines and prioritise tasks as well as mucking in to help the team.
  • Be comfortable with using IT and able to learn new skills quickly.

TO APPLY

Please click here to apply. You will be asked for your details, a short writing task, a covering letter which must include how you fit the person specification and why you want to work for 38 Degrees, as well as a CV.

If shortlisted, you will be notified by the end of February and be invited to an assessment day. This is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday 8th March 2016.

Unfortunately due to the large number of applications, it is not possible to provide feedback to individual applicants regarding unsuccessful applications.

Here’s what some previous interns have said about our programme:

“If you’re an aspiring campaigner then you will not find a better school than 38 Degrees. Think of it as a lab that mixes concepts like people-power with innovative tactics to deliver ever more ambitious campaigns. Each week will be different. If you want to work on a wide range of campaigns and learn something new everyday then 38 Degrees is the place to go.”

“The 38 Degrees internship is a fantastic introduction to campaigning – I’ve learned a lot about spotting campaigns, building strategies, supporting local campaigners, using the media and working with tech. It’s fast-paced, varied and fun!”

“The internship programme set me up for being a campaigner. The staff team were really gracious with their time, making sure I was always learning and given new tasks to stretch myself. I finished the internship having run some campaigns – and won! – and this would have never happened without the training and support I was given."

Please note that any offer of work will be conditional upon the successful candidate:

1. having the right to work in the United Kingdom which (i) is not invalid, (ii) has not ceased to have effect, or (iii) is subject to a condition preventing him/her from accepting the employment; or
2. obtaining the right to work in the United Kingdom prior to commencing work.

Application deadline: 6pm 22nd January 2016, for a March or April 2016 start
