Responsibilities
 
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing operational environmental support to the Surmont Health, Safety and Environment Operations team. Under the direction of the Environmental Coordinator, primary responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 
  • Coordinating environmental field activities conducted by contractors
  • Support for spill events or other environmental incidents
  • Reporting and data collection support for monitoring requirements in the facility's Alberta Environment Approval
  • Assisting in developing, tracking and reporting on HSE key performance indicators and trends
  • Site environmental inspections
  • Work on special environmental initiatives such as spill prevention or waste management
  • Provide general support to the larger Surmont HSE team, including some duties relevant to health and safety components of the facility
In this position, the student will get exposure to the environmental management programs (soil, surface water, hydrogeology, air, wetland) and requirements experienced at a major SAGD facility and will provide additional exposure to health and safety experience as well.
 
This role is based in Calgary and will require frequent travel to our Surmont facility south of Fort McMurray, Alberta.
 
 

Qualifications

Basic Requirements
  • 2nd or 3rd year student pursuing a degree in Environmental Sciences or Environmental Studies
  • Proficient (ability to perform the skill with limited assistance) in Microsoft Products (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook)
  • Must be legally permitted to work in Canada on a regular full-time basis without restrictions
Preferred Qualifications
  • Past work experience in the oil and gas industry through summer employment or co-op work term
  • Must enjoy working in a fast paced, team environment
  • A self-starter, willing to work independently and across organizational boundaries
  • Detail orientated and committed to constant improvement
  • Ability to work independently with minimum supervision in the execution of their duties
  • Must possess strong communication and organizational skills
