The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK)offers research positions - subject to final authorization of project funds in the Research Domain II „Climate Impacts and Vulnerabilities. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK) was founded in 1992 and now has a staff of about 290 people working on a variety of aspects of climate and global change. The research domain is chaired by Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Lucht and Prof. Dr. Helga Weisz and consists of three research fields (Biosphere 2100, North-South Project, Regional Impacts and Strategies).

The North-South Research Group (NSP) tries to improve its socio-economic expertise and seeks for an administrative assistant. The successful applicants will be involved in the research activities of the NSP Group  at PIK (www.pik-potsdam.de/nsp) which is led by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kropp. Under the rooftop of the NSP Group currently work 10 different disciplines and the group is in particular focusing on a reconciliation of climate protection targets, adaptation and development. Consequently all applicants should enjoy working in an international and interdisciplinary team. The junior scientists have to enrol as a PhD candidate at one of the partner universities of PIK. The main working language is English. A close cooperation with the other projects running under the North-South Theme is mandatory. Due to PIK's nature experiences in the context of climate impact research are highly welcome. A demonstrated potential for excellence in research is requested from all applicants for this vacancy.


PhD student: Social Scientist, Development Economist, or equivalent (28 month, with an option for a possible extension, nsp02)

We offer one PhD position for a Social Scientist or Development Economist. Salary is according to E13/50% TV-L.

Duties

The successful applicant will conduct research on sustainable transitions of societies in view of climate change, with the special focus on the large developing and emerging economies. In particular which role economic, political, social and institutional development may play in regard to climate protection and adaptation targets. It is the overarching aim to cross-check political goals against regional sustainability targets.

Skills

This position requires background in social sciences (or a related field) with an emphasis on quantitative methods. The position requires strong analytical skills. Understanding of organizational theory and the ability to abstract and describe overarching socio-economic and political processes are will be an additional asset as is a strong interest for inter-disciplinary research.

PhD student: Physicist or equivalent (28 months, with an option for a possible extension, nsp03)

We offer one PhD position for a physicist or equivalent. Salary is according to E13/2 (50%) TV-L.

Duties

The successful applicant will conduct research and modeling on transitions to sustainability. In particular the candidate will work in the modeling and impact assessment group of the research group. The modeling tasks comprises the development of a generalized damage approaches allowing the regional calculation of damage and adaptation costs.

Skills

This position requires background in environmental physics, mathematics, or a related field. The position requires strong analytical and modeling skills (programming skills included). Understanding of the climate change debate, cost assessment concepts, GIS, and modern qualitative and quantitative methods are an advantage as is a strong interest for inter-disciplinary research, and the ability to work independently.
