Description

The Cape Eleuthera Institute is seeking an intern to support its education programs.

Primary responsibilities include assisting with delivering outdoor education programs for middle school and high school students at The Island School/Cape Eleuthera Institute. This is a leadership role that includes: organizing logistics, orientating participants to their surroundings, teaching fish identification and basic marine ecology courses, touring the island, snorkeling, creating morning exercise programs, sea kayaking, community outreach, camping, enforcing rules, dorm duties, and monitoring the well being of students and their chaperones/instructors.

Secondary responsibilities may include assisting with research and work projects at CEI. Research opportunities may include, but are not limited to: cobia aquaculture, aquaponics, shark and bonefish research, etc. Work projects may include reef ball construction, landscaping, and boat maintenance.  This position requires the ability to work long hours with a close-knit group of peers.

Start Date: December 1st

End Date: June 1st

Depending on performance there is a potential for employment following the internship.

Qualifications

Desire to work with children and staff.  Ability to live and work in a small, remote setting and share a dormitory with up to 6 other community members.  Applicants should have a background in teaching/supervising students in an environmental setting. A marine biology/environmental science and sustainable system background is preferred. Wilderness medical certification is preferred (WFR, WAFA, etc.). Professional demeanor and desire to work on an ecologically-friendly campus.  Ability to live without regular access to "city life,” shopping, entertainment and other comforts.

Skills

Experience with planning and leading small expeditions for sea kayaking, beach camping, and snorkeling. Ability to operate boats and manual transmission vehicles, and have water safety training. Basic computer skills.

Shared ocean-front room and board for the duration of the internship.  The opportunity to be trained by Educators from the Cape Eleuthera Institute and the Island School.  Opportunity to improve teaching skills and cultivate curriculum design and program coordination skills.  The intern will also learn about marine ecology research, experimental design, and sustainable systems.  Reevaluation of duties, performance, and benefits after 3 months.
