As a Sr. Mechanical/Product Engineer, you will support the development of SunPower’s next generation PV rooftop framing and mounting systems. You will work with the R&D Product Team, taking responsibility for the products mechanical engineering performance and ensure the product can withstand structural environmental loads. You will initiate and oversee 3rd party engineering tests and reports, with a heavy emphasis on wind analysis, ensuring the product withstands these conditions for 25 year product life. You will participate as part of the Rooftop Systems Product Development Team, working directly with the Product Design, Engineering, Supply Base Management, Product Marketing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Reliability Teams.
The Role: You will be technically proficient in the field of Applied Mechanics and knowledgeable of environmental loading on PV roof mounted systems. You will demonstrate experience with Finite Element Analysis and knowledge of ASCE and IBC building code standards. Candidates must show a hands-on passion for their work and be able to communicate their ideas and concepts. Candidates must demonstrate an ability to integrate feedback and to respond quickly to changing contexts and work environments.
Required Experience: • 8+ years experience designing industrial, commercial, or consumer products that are produced with hi-volume manufactured methods. • Technically proficient in the field of Applied Mechanics with experience performing Finite Element Analysis using 3D CAD applications. • Knowledge of ASCE and IBC building code standards as they relate to the design and testing of PV products. • Experience making product engineering and cost tradeoffs. • Experience communicating ideas through sketches, illustrations, and 3D CAD. • Ability to communicate technical aspects of projects and work assignments to non-engineering teams. • Knowledge of hi-volume manufacturing methods including but not limited to plastic molding, sheet-metal fabrication, plastic and metal extrusions, metal casting, roll forming, etc. • Experience designing products with consumer, commercial and industrial materials. • Experience specifying material treatments to enhance structural or cosmetic requirements. • Experience in Design for Manufacturability, Assembly and Service (DFM, DFA, and DFS). • Experience designing for 25+ years of outdoor product life. • Experience in tolerance analysis, functional dimensioning, and geometric tolerancing. • Flexibility and comfort working in a fast pace and quickly changing environment.
Qualifications • BSME/MSME or equivalent • 8+ year’s Mechanical Engineering experience designing consumer, commercial, or industrial products. • Strong background in solid mechanics and FEA modeling using various commercial packages. • Familiar with IEC and UL standards • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to drive issues with cross-functional teams. • Analytic problem solving skills, including knowledge of DOE’s (Design of Experiments). • 3-D CAD skills (Solid-Works preferred)
