WRI is looking for a highly motivated and independent person to play a significant role in communication for the Access team.  Main communication efforts will be working with The Access Initiative (http://www.accessinitiative.org), a global network that promotes access to information, participation, and justice in environmental decision-making. The successful applicant will help develop the online community by working with international partners to encourage participation and write news stories for the interactive website. Additionally, the candidate will identify opportunities to increase brand recognition and implement outreach to other stakeholders working on similar issues.

 

15-20 hours per week (in the office or working remotely)

3 months with possibility of extension

Travel stipend available

 

Responsibilities:
  • Online communications and social media: (30%) Write and edit brief summaries of related news, publications, partner success stories for the Access Initiative website and blog.  Moderate blog and discussion groups for posts needing immediate comments and deleting spam.  Work with WRI central communications staff to profile TAI and cross post TAI stories on WRI website.  Help establish social media following and for access issues, especially pertaining to TAI’s work on the next Earth Summit, Rio 2012.  This will be done in collaboration with staff in both the Intuitions and Governance and External Relations Programs
  • Events and conferences: (10%) Assist with conference planning and coordination. Conduct research on upcoming events, update events calendars and inform staff of key events
  • Working with partners: (10%) Assist partners with questions about the website, suggestions for stories, and collecting photos and post them to TAI flickr account, etc.
  • Research and writing: (30%) Research partners outcomes and activities to put in a newsletter. Write, design and produce newsletters and other information memos
  • Outreach: (20%) Research outreach opportunities and develop relationships with other networks and NGOs working on access issues (specifically around Principle 10) to raise the profile of the TAI network amongst key audiences.  Assist with the outreach of the Rio 2012 work through various mediums 
Qualifications:

Student pursuing a degree in Communications, Journalism, International Development or related field. Post graduate student welcome. Knowledge and experience in online communications essential. Journalism experience preferred.

 

Specifically, we are looking for:

  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Demonstrated experience writing for online forums
  • Ability to quickly adapt stories as they relate to current events
  • Some knowledge of international development and environmental issues
  • Interest in role of online communications in international networks, policy forums.
  • Advanced skills with the Adobe Suite of graphic design tools
  • Broad familiarity with the function, use, and management of online software tools such as wikis, project management software, photo libraries (such as Flickr)
  • Strong computer skills - (Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc)
  • Detail-oriented, highly organized, and ability to work both in a team and independently
  • Ability to work in a multicultural and multidisciplinary setting
