Description

Gain valuable experience in the conservation sector from professional countryside managers and ecologists within a beautiful ancient woodland setting in South London.

About The Conservation Volunteers (TCV)

Reclaiming green spaces since 1959, TCV has been using local collective action to support over 300,000 volunteers each year on environmental conservation projects and is the UK's leading practical conservation charity. TCV connects people with place, builds healthy, sustainable communities, and increases people s life skills.

About Dulwich Upper Wood

Dulwich Upper Wood is an important local nature reserve (LNR) with Green Flag Award status, managed by TCV as an educational resource, research area and leisure facility.  We are beginning a new phase in our development and are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help manage this ancient woodland and protect its biodiversity for future generations to enjoy.

About the role

As a woodland conservation volunteer you will gain vital experience in the conservation, countryside management and ecology sectors. Volunteers are involved in all aspects of managing this ancient woodland and protecting its biodiversity, from conducting wildlife surveys and coppicing trees in the wood, to helping us build new sustainable buildings on site and engaging with the local community.   Come along to explore this landmark location, discover a hidden green space, improve your health and stamina, learn new skills and meet volunteers with similar interests - all over a hot drink brewed in the woods!

Which days are you needed?

Initially, you’ll be working on Tuesdays from 10.30 – 4pm, with some flexibility and plenty of tea and food breaks!  Once you’ve learnt the ropes you’ll be able to change your volunteering day during the working week as it suits you.

What we can offer you

  • Free comprehensive in house and formal training tailored to your individual interests and needs.  Topics include (but are not limited to): woodland management, biodiversity monitoring and surveying, flora/fauna identification, coppicing, hedge laying, sustainable building techniques, events management, community engagement, health and safety, and first aid.
  • Regular supervision and on-going support to help monitor your progress, and help with personal development.
  • Help with job applications and CVs, plus references for committed volunteers.
  • Reimbursement of travel expenses.

What are we looking for?

The willingness to join in and get your hands dirty!  No experience is necessary but a passion for the environment and for working outdoors is essential.  Each session will provide a range of activities to ensure all have a safe and memorable day that will help to transform the Woods.

This is an ongoing position with potential for increased responsibility and further training opportunities for committed volunteers.  For further information please contact Annie Talbot on 020 8761 6230 (Tuesdays and Wednesdays) or by email; dulwich@btcv.org.uk.
