WILDERNESS WORKSHOP 2012 SUMMER INTERNSHIP JOB DESCRIPTION The Wilderness Workshop intern will be based at the Wilderness Workshop office in Carbondale, Colorado and will work under the supervision of various Wilderness Workshop and Hidden Gems Campaign staff based on the requirements of each activity or assignment.
?The intern's primary activities will consist of the following: organizing support for congressional wilderness proposals; conducting hikes and tours of the proposed wilderness areas; and planning and coordinating summer events. Additional duties may include, but are not limited to: preparing for and delivering presentations; public outreach and tabling at events; engaging and rallying supporters by phone and in person; participating in outreach to the local community and businesses; updating the campaign’s website and social media sites; preparing materials; tracking media coverage; assembling mailings; and petitioning in high-traffic public locations. ??A significant portion of work may involve assisting with hikes into proposed wilderness areas. In addition to the qualifications described below, applicants who wish to participate in hikes should have previous experience leading back-county hikes, first aid training, and suitable physical fitness.??Interns will represent the Hidden Gems Campaign and its member organizations in many public settings and must maintain a respectful and appropriate dress, appearance and attitude at all times. Qualifications • Completion of at least two years at a four-year college or university* • Excellent and persuasive writing, speaking and interpersonal skills • Demonstrated passion for and understanding of public land conservation issues • Enthusiastic interest in working on a major wilderness campaign • Proficiency in office computer programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), web research and social media • Strong map-reading skills • Strong organizational skills • Experience in advocacy work and/or event planning strongly desired • Flexibility – some evening/weekend work and travel will be required • Ability to work independently and also as part of a team • Ability to maintain a respectful demeanor during outreach activities and public events • Willingness to maintain a personal appearance and dress respectful of and appropriate to public outreach activities • Have own vehicle (a plus) and willingness to travel around the region as needed (mileage compensated) Compensation & time commitment $1,000-2,000/month stipend depending upon experience for full-time work (40 hours a week)*. Internship dates are flexible, but will generally run from May 28 - Aug. 31, 2012.
