Description: The Great Basin Institute, in cooperation with the Bureau of Land Management Ely Field Office, is recruiting to hire a Wilderness Outreach & Education Specialist. Working under the direction of BLM Wilderness Staff, the Specialist will conduct outreach and educational efforts which highlight the 50th Anniversary of the Wilderness Act and the local wilderness areas found throughout the county. The Specialist will teach wilderness education and Leave No Trace workshops in the White Pine County school system and to the public at large, performing program research and design, and coordinating with BLM Division staff in preparing educational programs and plans and volunteer events. The Specialist will be required to travel from Ely to various towns through White Pine County on a reoccurring basis. Anticipated educational benefits derived from this position include:

-expertise in land use issues relating to Wilderness Management,

-experience in presenting educational materials to the public on Wilderness in White Pine County,

-expertise in project tracking and review,

-field expertise in the central Great Basin ecosystem, and

-experience working in environmental education associated with Wilderness.

Compensation & Timeline:

-Rate of Pay: $18.59/hour

-Medical Insurance (health and dental)

-Start date: June/July 2014 (or upon availability) through November 24, 2014

-Full-time, 40 hours per week (minimal overtime and occasional weekend work may be required)

LocationEly, NV (No housing provided.)

Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s degree in biology/ecology, recreation planning, environmental studies, environmental education or outreach, or related field;

-Minimum of 1 year field experience related to public outreach, recreation planning, wilderness interpretation, and/or volunteer event planning;

-Understanding of outdoor/environmental education principles and techniques;

-Experience teaching educational programs including Leave-no-Trace and general public land stewardship ethics;

-Strong written and oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively communicate BLM Wilderness principles and talking points to a diverse public;

-Knowledge of ArcGIS 10.1, desirable;

-Capable of meeting deadlines and producing professional deliverables including reports and education materials;

-Appreciation and understanding of Wilderness benefits and opportunities; and

-Possess a clean, valid, state-issued driver’s license with the ability to operate 4wd vehicles and ATVs on- and off-road.

-Successful applicant(s) must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to BLM human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
