06/06/14 - 08/06/14
The course will cover the identification, ecology and distribution of wild orchids as well as the astonishing pollination mechanisms which have evolved. The chalk downs of southern England are renowned for their orchids and a third of the 50 British species of wild orchid grow on and around Box Hill. Of these, about 12 species should be in flower at this time of year. Recent studies of population biology and propagation techniques will be discussed in the context of their contribution to orchid conservation. The field excursions will provide plenty of opportunities for photography. No previous knowledge is necessary; this is a course for anyone interested in wild orchids. By combining this course with the later orchid course at Kindrogan you will see almost half of all British orchid species.
