This position involves working with clients and on project teams involving water resources/civil engineering and related technical assignments. Assigned work tasks may include: conducting wetland delineations, inventories, and functional assessments; development of permit applications, planning wetland restoration projects (including wetland construction and oversight), conducting environmental reviews, and negotiating with regulatory agencies. The ecologist will work with scientists, engineers, and other Barr staff – as well as with regulatory staff and clients. The ecologist will work to resolve ecological and regulatory constraints for projects, and prepare applications and reports required for implementation of projects and mitigation of any development impacts.

NOTE:Some work locations may feature rough terrain typical of construction sites and may also require entering and working within facilities that include limited accessibility, moving machinery, and other conditions typical of industrial facilities. Job assignments may involve work on waste disposal sites and sites requiring cleanup of hazardous materials. An OSHA mandated physical exam may be required. Safety training will be provided.


Minimum Qualifications

  • B.S. in ecology, botany, hydrology, water resources, or similar natural resources field.
  • Superior writing and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of and experience with state and federal NEPA regulations and permitting processes; including wetland delineations, permitting, restoration, and establishment
  • GIS experience and basic computer skills.
  • 5-10 years of directly-related experience.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with local, state and federal regulators.
  • Proven experience in meeting client needs.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Advanced degree and/or specialized experience in ecology, or natural resources field.
  • Wetland Conservation Act administration experience.
  • Experience in wetland delineation and permitting projects, and wetland assessments.
  • Certified wetland delineator status.
  • Familiarity with northern Minnesota wetland ecology and permitting.
  • Knowledge of and experience with wetland restoration design and construction, and restoration project contracting and management.
  • Proficiency with GIS tools.
  • Knowledge of state and federal endangered species programs.
  • EAW and EIS preparation experience.
  • Consulting experience.
