Description

Ducks Unlimited’s Great Plains Regional Office in Bismarck, ND seeks two waterfowl ecology technicians to assist with nest searching at the Ducks Unlimited Coteau Ranch and The Nature Conservancy’s Davis Ranch in Sheridan County, North Dakota during May - July of 2020.

Major responsibilities will include waterfowl nest searching using an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) chain drag technique, nest monitoring using miniature surveillance cameras, and assisting in behavioral analysis using the collected video data. The successful applicants will also play a large role in guiding students who are working at the Coteau Ranch on field research projects related to the nest cameras. Consequently, previous experience with nest cameras, nest dragging, and behavioral analysis will be strongly preferred. Technicians will also play a role in guiding less-experienced peers who are working on field projects for school credit. Field work is physically and mentally demanding and takes place under challenging conditions. Therefore, only enthusiastic, dedicated individuals should apply. A strong interest in ecology, desire to spend long days in the field and determination to get the job done well is required. Inquisitive, detail-oriented and self-motivated applicants will be preferred. Successful applicants will be expected to work effectively with and without direct supervision. Preference will be given to applicants who possess or are working toward a degree in wildlife ecology or similar area of study. Applicants with ATV experience are also strongly preferred. Applicants must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record and pass a drug screen.

These technician positions will provide opportunities to gain field experience and continue developing a competitive skill set. The positions run from mid-May through the end of July. The technicians will work closely in the field with Ducks Unlimited scientists and University of North Dakota faculty and students. The successful applicants will be paid $11.25/hour, and shared housing will be provided in Wing, ND.
