California Communications Associate

Clean Water Action/Clean Water Fund seeks a motivated part time program associate to play a lead role in implementing campaigns to protect clean water in California by supporting internal and external communications activities.  Clean Water Action is a national citizens’ organization working for clean, safe and affordable water, prevention of health-threatening pollution, creation of environmentally-safe jobs and businesses, and empowerment of people to make democracy work. Clean Water Fund organizes strong grassroots groups, coalitions and campaigns to protect our environment, health, economic well-being and community quality of life.

Primary duties include:

  • Compose, edit, and distribute key communication documents for multiple and diverse internal and external audiences.
  • Manage social media strategy and its execution across Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms.
  • Ensure that CWA and CWF organizational and campaign websites are up-to-date, reflect current organizational priorities, and highlight recent developments and new tools.
  • Manage campaign list-serves and provide campaign support.
  • Organize press conferences, other public events, and earned media activities to publicize issues and promote specific campaign objectives.
  • Update and assemble media kits.
  • Design and produce fact sheets and activist toolkits.
  • Create online communications tools and content.
  • Coordinate and conduct website updates.
  • Coordinate newsletter preparation.
  • Develop and maintain media lists and other related contacts.
  • Contribute as a productive, forward-thinking member of the California program.
  • Provide support for fundraising activities and events.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's degree in Journalism or related field required.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in non-profit communications or marketing work, including experience writing materials for external audiences.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal skills required.
  • Ability to remain flexible and adapt to changing needs and priorities.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and articulate complex issues.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit organizational issues.
  • Interest in and ability to readily acquire knowledge of a broad array of program, policy, research, communications and fundraising issues critical to Clean Water Action’s goals.
  • Undergraduate communications degree or professional experience equivalent.
  • Knowledge of the practices and techniques of writing news releases and stores.
  • Graphic design experience desirable.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms.
  • Experience using social media to engage the public and constituencies in action.
  • Well organized including good attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and simultaneous projects.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Productive, hardworking, and reliable, able to meet deadlines and complete assignments on time;
  • Must have valid driver’s license and be willing to drive by car to set up and staff events, including some lifting and transporting of materials.
