We are looking for a WA Black Cockatoo Project Officer to work with experts both within BirdLife Australia and externally, to help deliver strategies to reduce crop damage by Black-Cockatoos in orchards, helping to deliver BirdLife’s long-term citizen science monitoring of Black-cockatoo populations.

This exciting new role will work collaboratively with volunteers, communities, stakeholders and project partners to contribute research knowledge and improve conservation outcomes for threatened Black-Cockatoos in WA.

You will do this by:

  • Assisting with the delivery of a black-cockatoo-deterring laser trials in orchards in southwest WA.
  • Assisting with the coordination of citizen-science monitoring programs including the Great Cocky Count and Cocky Watch.
  • Conducting community education workshops about Black-Cockatoos and community training workshops on monitoring programs.  
  • Undertaking data entry and maintenance of monitoring databases.
  • Utilising a range of equipment and technology to undertake field surveys and data collection.
  • Working with project partners, private landowners and stakeholders to develop effective strategies for conserving black-cockatoos in rural landscapes.

Status and remuneration:

This is a part-time position 3 days per week (0.6 FTE) offered on a two-year contract. Hours are flexible with weekend and evening work likely. The project is based in the WA office in Floreat with fieldwork expected to occur in the greater Perth metropolitan and southwest region.  

Salary starting from $61,675 per annum (for a full time equivalent) plus 10.5% super. You will also enjoy great benefits including:

To apply for this role you must have:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of and skills in identification of Black-cockatoos and the conservation issues facing them
  • Experience with biological fieldwork in a range of conditions
  • Ability to collect and manage biological data, including data entry and vetting, manipulation and extraction, and competency with database software
  • Good verbal and written communication skills, including experience or skills in preparing and presenting community workshops/events
  • Ability to work to prioritise tasks and work to deadlines
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience working collaboratively with volunteers and community groups on rural conservation projects
  • A current driver’s licence and access to vehicle suitable for fieldwork
  • Have valid Australian work rights with permission to work
