When attempting to identify wild flowers, the seemingly infinite variety of colours and designs can seem overwhelming. Britain may not have a vast flora compared with other countries, but 2,500 odd seems more than enough for the beginner. The first step is to recognise that flowers can be arranged into natural groups or families. To be able to recognise the features that typify the family is a big step towards naming a 'new' plant. We have at least 140 families represented in Britain but more than three quarters of our wild flowers belong to one of only 20 of these families - The Top 20! Mastering the floral features of these 20 families represents a huge step in the confidence and competence of the budding field botanist We shall explore the many varied habitats around Juniper Hall looking, not for rarities, but variety - of which there is plenty.
