Description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a talented and dedicated person to join our growing urban bird program team.

Working with a great team to improve conservation outcomes for Australian birds by supporting the delivery of the Birds in Backyards Program and the Urban Bird Conservation Action Plan (UB CAP) through the Urban Bird Program, this is a part-time maternity leave position offered on a 12 month contract at three days per week, preferably working out of Sydney, with other locations negotiable. Growth opportunities within the program mean that ongoing employment is a possibility.

Background

The Urban Bird Program’s core project, Birds in Backyards (BIBY) has a 21 year history of engaging people with birds in urban spaces through citizen science, with the aim of improving the outlook for urban bird communities and the people who live with them. Since 2006 BIBY has had an active advisory committee and a stable funding base through ongoing relationships with two significant donors and occasional grants for a number of projects throughout its history (including the current Birds in Schools and Powerful Owl Projects).

In 2019 BIBY transitioned into the newly created Urban Bird Program, acknowledging the importance of our urban bird communities and the significant growth of BIBY and affiliated projects nationally. The Urban Bird Program is now being guided by a national strategic plan and the multi-stakeholder Urban Bird Conservation Action Plan in development (UB CAP). The UB CAP articulates the strategies and measures of success for the Urban Bird Program that will be implemented and measured through a range of partners and stakeholders (such as local councils and NGOs) towards the conservation of key urban bird communities across Australia but with an initial focus on the Greater Sydney Region.

We require an experienced Program Coordinator to support the Urban Bird Program Managers in tasks arising from this important and exciting program including the delivery and growth of BIBY nationally and coordinating local on-ground activities for the UB CAP, initially in Sydney. It provides an excellent opportunity for the applicant to develop and drive activities to address an important and growing bird conservation issue in Australia. The Urban Bird Program Coordinator helps BirdLife Australia achieve its strategic goal of improving conservation outcomes for Australian birds and is a key position within the team.

This position is offered at BL Level 3, with a salary range starting at $67,000 FTE.
