Reports to:

Head of Technology Acceleration

Purpose and scope of the role:

To help deliver and grow Carbon Trust's activities in offshore renewables, with the aim of driving down the cost of offshore renewable energy. The activities include

  • Joint industry projects involving industry and Government aiming to reduce cost (e.g. Offshore Wind Accelerator)
  • Technology support to Government and EU offshore renewable programmes that provide support to the most promising innovations
  • Consultancy to industry to develop offshore wind corporate strategies

Main duties and responsibilities:

  • Leading technology and strategy projects related to offshore renewables, planning activities, procuring and managing consultants, and delivering on time and to budget
  • Designing new initiatives (commercial models, demonstration projects, etc.) to amplify the impact of Carbon Trust offshore renewable projects
  • Providing technical insight into factors that influence the cost of offshore renewables, e.g.
    • Marine operations - for installation, O&M
    • Civil engineering - for foundation design and serial fabrication
    • Naval architecture -for assessing vessel performance
    • Electrical systems - for reducing losses and optimising design
  • Providing strategic direction for the Carbon Trust to improve the delivery and increase the impact of offshore renewables projects
  • Coordinating closely with Carbon Trust experts, industrial partners and Government stakeholders to ensure the projects are implemented

Key Performance Indicators:

  • Impact delivered (e.g. tangible impact to offshore renewable cost reduction, new insights into offshore renewables, strengthened and extended Carbon Trust offshore renewable activities)
  • Projects delivered on time and on budget 

Key skills:

  • Project management experience
  • Technical knowledge related to offshore renewables and to commercialising innovations
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills
  • Good communication skills (written and oral)
  • Good problem solving skills
  • Ability to work effectively in a complex team environment
  • Ability to work on standalone basis 

 

Qualifications and experience:

Required

  • Significant relevant experience in commercial, engineering or project management, at an engineering, manufacturing or technology related business, or a high-end engineering consultancy
  • Degree educated (at least 2:1) ideally in a science/engineering discipline
  • Ambition and passion to drive the development of the offshore renewables industry

 Desirable

  • Experience in wind energy (preferably offshore) or marine energy
  • Experience in technical disciplines influencing cost of offshore renewables (e.g. marine operations, civil engineering, manufacturing engineering, naval architecture, oil and gas)
  • Experience of structuring commercial models
