Title: Staff Scientist – Marine Carbon Dioxide Research

Location: Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Research Group, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: We are seeking to appoint a Staff Scientist in the field of Marine CO2 research. The postholder will be expected to develop and implement a novel, imaginative and world-class research programme in Marine CO2 research in the context of NERC strategic priorities including the TAP actions in greenhouse gas (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/themes/tap/tap-phase3.asp#greenhouse); shelf seas biogeochemistry (http://www.nerc.ac.uk/research/themes/tap/tap-phase3.asp#shelf) and the Integrated Carbon Observing System (http://www.icos-infrastructure.eu/). Representative activities might include diagnosing the air sea CO2 flux from observations, evaluating the effect of CO2 on marine organisms or estimating anthropogenic storage of CO2 i in the deep ocean.

The OBE group is well equipped to host such a programme with dedicated laboratory and analytical facilities, regular access to shipboard sampling programmes and mooring infrastructure. In addition, we represent a critical mass of expertise in the oceanic biological sequestration of carbon and our co-location with the School of Ocean and Earth Science of the University of Southampton allows for student co-supervision.

This post will be offered as an open ended position on NERC terms and conditions at either a Band 6 (salary range £26,180 to £29,410 per annum), Band 5 (£30,710 to £37,120 per annum) or as a Band 4 (£36,240 to £48,230 per annum) scientist, depending upon experience.

At all three grades you will have a PhD or equivalent experience in Marine Carbon Dioxide related research or a related field, a thorough knowledge of the marine CO2 system and, a track record of publications in marine CO2 research and grant capture appropriate to career stage. For all posts, you will have a clear objective/sense of direction for your research programme and a plan for achieving the desired outcomes. At the higher grades you should have the ability to form and lead a research group in the field using a diversity of funding streams.
