Description

Location: Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Research Group (OBE), National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton

Description: Our Centre, at Southampton, represents a collaborative partnership with the University of Southampton’s School of Ocean and Earth Science (OES); this partnership is underpinned by the Graduate School of NOCS, which, with over 200 PhD students, represents one of the largest postgraduate marine science communities in the World -http://noc.ac.uk/gsnocs

The NERC Directorate of Science and Technology at the NOC contains five research groups. Our science has high socio-economic impact and tackles many of the major environmental issues of immediate concern to both Government and public.

We are now looking to recruit a high-quality candidate to an open-ended post to strengthen and expand our research in the Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems group. http://noc.ac.uk/science-technology/research-groups/obe

We would expect the post-holder to develop a novel, imaginative and world-class programme focused on defining the air-sea flux of CO2 or the interior storage of CO2 using a combination of in situ, remotely sensed or numerical model-based data. Building strong links to the global research area in this field and to the EU programme ICOS would be highly desirable.

Representative activities might include diagnosing the air sea CO2 flux from observations, evaluating the effect of CO2 on marine organisms or estimating anthropogenic storage of CO2 in the deep ocean. The OBE group is well equipped to host such a programme with dedicated laboratory and analytical facilities and regular access to shipboard sampling programmes and mooring infrastructure. In addition we represent a critical mass of expertise in the oceanic biological sequestration of carbon. Our co-location with the School of Ocean and Earth Science of the University of Southampton provides a fertile environment for wide collaboration and the great advantages of student co-supervision.

General enquiries regarding this post should be directed to Dr Richard Sanders, Head of Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems (e-mail rics@noc.ac.uk).

The post will be offered on NERC terms and conditions, with indicative salaries at Band 6 (Staff Scientist) being £26,180 to £29,410 per annum; Band 5 (Senior Staff Scientist) being £30,710 to £37,120 per annum and Band 4 (Principal Staff Scientist) being £36,240 to £48,230 per annum (depending upon experience).

NERC provides benefits that include a RCUK pension scheme and a generous leave scheme offering up to 30 days leave and a further 10.5 Public/privilege days. Opportunities for further training and development are supported.
