We are looking for top-notch accounting clerk to support OCEANA, the world’s largest international organization dedicated to restoring and protecting the world’s oceans.  If you are detail-oriented, self-motivated and have three or more years of grant management, financial reporting and budgeting experience, this is a chance to participate in achieving concrete policy changes to protect marine life throughout the world.

OCEANA has an immediate need for a Sr. Accountant to assist our Controller with grant reporting, budgeting and financial reporting processes for our accounting department.  This is a full-time salaried position.  The Senior Accountant is primarily responsible for the fiscal management of grants and contracts in accordance with donor requirements and Oceana policy. The Senior Accountant will also be responsible for:

  • Leading development of institutional planning and budgeting process (both revenue and cost), including the development of the budget manual and templates, creation of tools to develop work plans, work with programs developing budgets, and reconciliation of budgets with programmatic work plans and organizational goals.
  • Leading the production of financial analyses and presentations for Oceana’s Board of Directors throughout the year.
  • Developing regular financial reports and analysis forecasting and trending budget performance and institutional financial positioning for Senior Management.
  • Assisting the Controller and Senior Management on special projects that require financial analysis
  • Leading processes and communications regularly working with department/region budget owners across the organization to monitor and revise budgets throughout the year and life of project(s).
  • Ensuring compliance with current budget and spending policies, and propose improved policies and systems regarding spending guidelines, cost savings, cost allocation, and annual planning.
  • Liaise with both the development team and their systems to ensure that across departments there is financial continuity, accuracy, and adherence to key processes such as clear cost and revenue accounting, reporting and compliance.
  • Work with the Accounting team to streamline internal financial reports and reporting processes to deliver more efficient, more effective, and more useful reports and analysis.
  • Guarantee grants budgets align with institutional budgets and forecasts.
  • Closely monitor grant performance for major institutional donors.
  • Work with grants management team to ensure that key processes and systems are in place to manage grant risk assessments, donor financial compliance, and reporting management processes.
  • Provide training to staff on budget management processes and systems.
  • Work with external reviewers to evaluate grant activity and reporting.
  • Monitors organizational and regional office cash flow, and initiates operational funding transfers to regional offices when necessary.
  • Allocate indirect costs incurred by the organization in accordance with United States generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP)
  • Assists the Controller with the preparation of the annual financial statements, 990 filing and other external reports, as needed.
  • Assists the Controller with the review of weekly accounts payable check run and semi-monthly payroll run, as needed.
  • Computing and recording statistical, numerical or financial data.
  • Determining the completeness and accuracy of financial reports and transactions, including account balance(s) and reconciling any discrepancies.
  • Responding to internal inquiries related to budget, grants and financial reporting.
  • Assist with other finance related projects as assigned.
  • Adhering to departmental internal controls and escalating to management knowledge of variances from established work protocol.

A successful candidate will have: 

  • At least five or more years of general ledger account reconciliation, budgeting, cash management, financial statement preparation and/or external auditing experience.
  • At least two years of experience with grant management and reporting for non-profit organizations.
  • Must have a comprehensive understanding of U.S. GAAP, internal controls and financial reporting risk management.
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting is required.
  • A C.P.A. or C.P.A candidate is preferred.
  • Prior experience with a Microsoft Dynamics SL (Solomon) accounting system preferred.
  • Advance proficiency in Microsoft Excel and experience with financial systems integration.
  • Experience in budgeting and budget planning including development of annual budgets, forecasting and variance analysis.
  • Experience of grants management implications in budgeting and with proposal budget development.
  • Demonstrated project management and problem solving and ability skills to find creative solutions.
  • Proven ability to prioritize projects and initiate follow through with meticulous attention detail.
  • Excellent data presentation skills and ability to write clearly and concisely.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills; tact, patience, diplomacy, confidentiality and integrity.
  • Ability to manage multiple competing priorities, difficult situations and deadlines.
  • Ability to maintain organized notes, records and electronic files.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Demonstrates an enthusiastic approach to work, has a strong desire to learn new processes and strives to improve existing processes.
