Slugs are often dismissed contemptuously as snails with bad PR. In fact, slugs form an interesting group of around 40 species in Britain, many of these species are not pests. Most slugs are easy to identify using only a Mk.1 eyeball and, sometimes, a 10x hand lens; identification is considerably eased with the new FSC guide which will be available for use over the weekend. The course will utilise the variety of habitats around the Centre where we should find a plentiful supply and variety of slugs enjoying the damp climate for which North Wales is famous. Slug distributions are grossly under-recorded and mostly biased away from 'human habitats'. Many species' distributions are changing very fast probably in response to changing climate and human activity. The course is for beginners, but by the end you will be sufficiently equipped to make real contributions to knowledge of local slug distributions (often without travelling beyond the confines of your garden).
