Description

The National Audubon Society is building and strengthening its hemispheric reach in the Americas, both in Latin America and the Caribbean. The International Alliances Program’s (IAP) new strategic plan provides the roadmap for strengthening our existing work and expanding the Program to achieve on-the-ground conservation, strengthened in-country partners, and improved conservation policies throughout the region. The Senior Program Manager for Latin America will be responsible for leading and growing the strategy, the team and Audubon’s presence in Central America, Mexico and South America to carry out our work effectively and efficiently.

The Senior Program Manager for Latin America will build, lead and manage his/her team to guarantee high quality results; and help fundraise from public and private sources and build new projects that support our work. S/he will be responsible for cultivating and maintaining partnerships with key local, national and regional entities and strengthen their operational, technical and leadership capabilities. S/he will also support development of national and regional policy initiatives that improve the context for conservation. Finally, as part of the IAP team, the Senior Program Manager will act as a key leader for the program area, communicating and coordinating within Audubon in order to promote more cohesive work across the organization.  S/he will be an essential spokesperson for Audubon in front of partners, governments, funders and other regional entities and represent the organization in conferences and other high-level meetings.

The location of this position is to be determined; the preference is in Latin America.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Build and lead Audubon’s in-region presence and team to fully carry-out Audubon’s strategy in Latin America.
  • Lead and manage all ongoing work in Latin America, and be responsible for overseeing all programmatic activity and guaranteeing high-level results through measurable outcomes.
  • Develop and guide the strategic direction of Audubon in the countries where we are present and as a key member of the team regionally.
  • Working closely with the Vice President, expand the program into new geographic areas, build new partnerships, and develop new initiatives and projects that move Audubon’s conservation strategy forward.
  • Responsible for developing sufficient funding from public sources and working closely with the Audubon Development team to secure funding from private sources in order to fully fund IAP’s work.
  • Ensure effective coordination and communication within the Audubon Network that further integrates IAP’s international work into the overall organization.
  • Position and represent Audubon in front of partner organizations, key actors (governments, corporations, multi-laterals), donors, and in conferences and high-level meetings as needed.
  • Be the principal liaison with partners and guide their institutional strengthening, provide technical input and guidance on in-country conservation activities and develop and support key policy issues within the region.

 

Qualifications and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in nonprofit organization management, international development, conservation, or similar field required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Seven to ten years of on-the-ground conservation experience in Latin America managing programs and projects; knowledge of bird conservation ideal.
  • Fluency in Spanish and English; additional knowledge of Portuguese a strong plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in successfully carrying out conservation activities, strategies and policies that achieved concrete results; knowledge and understanding of conservation organizations, government and other key actors in the region required.
  • Must possess a successful individual and/or team-based track record of fundraising, which includes public funding, foundation proposals, donor cultivation and grant writing.
  • Entrepreneurial and creative spirit, with the ability to: resolve problems, navigate complex situations and establish and maintain cohesive, functional partnerships in multiple arenas.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication (verbal and written), and negotiation skills; ability to manage time and diverse activities under pressure while obtaining solid, high quality results.
  • Experience building, leading and supervising multi-disciplinary teams across a decentralized institution with staff distributed across a wide geography.
  • Flexible approach to work, to include the willingness to travel internationally (up to 50%) and interest in living and working within Latin America.
