Our Glasgow ecology team has been working for the last year on a variety of projects for Scottish Water ranging from Extended Phase I habitat and protected species surveys to detailed eco-hydrological studies on the River Tweed and its tributaries. We are looking for an experienced senior ecologist to join the team and lead elements of this work. You will be expert in at least one technical discipline with appropriate professional consultancy experience, a proportion of which should have been with a multi-disciplinary consultancy, statutory authority, water company or similar. Qualifications
BSc. MIEEM
Ecological desk studies and reports
You will undertake desk studies to identify ecological constraints from information requested from biological records centres, wildlife trusts and other data sources, and produce clear reports that summarise the findings of the desk studies with recommendations for appropriate ecological surveys. You will be competent to technically review the content of ecological reports produced by others, including chapters of EIAs and Appropriate Assessments. Experience of contributing to (or assessing) Water Resources strategic studies would be advantageous.
Habitats assessment
You should be experienced in undertaking initial Phase I habitat surveys and possess competent botanical identification skills for the main families of terrestrial and wetland ecosystems. An ability to survey and identify key aquatic macrophytes would be advantageous.
Protected species experience
Experience in surveying for protected species is required and a licence to survey and handle great crested newts would be an advantage, as you are likely to be a lead ecologist for licensed mitigation works on various schemes. Experience of using heterodyne, frequency division and time expansion bat detectors with analysis using BatSound software would be useful.
Ecological impact assessment and mitigation
Experience of Ecological Impact Assessment (EcIA) is required and expertise in developing mitigation strategies for minimising any impacts on habitats and species of conservation importance is expected.
Project management
You will be able to assist with the scoping, estimating and tendering for work and be proficient in scheduling people and allocating resources to projects. You will have responsibility for the day-to-day management of project resources so the ability to manage a project budget is essential.
Team working experience
You will be able to work independently on smaller projects, as well as within a multi-disciplinary group comprising other ecologists and engineers working on larger projects and EIAs. Typical schemes include the assessments of abstraction schemes, pipeline construction methods and associated impacts, water resource strategic studies, hydro-ecology investigations and terrestrial re-developments.
Line management experience
You will need to manage and develop more junior ecologists, so you must have the desire and ability to act as a technical mentor and ensure the effective transfer of ecological skills.
