The Rainforest Alliance is an international nonprofit organization that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior.  Based in New York City, with offices throughout the United States and worldwide, the Rainforest Alliance works with people whose livelihoods depend on the land, helping them transform the way they grow food, harvest wood and host travelers. 

Position Summary: 

The Senior Accountant is a key member of the Mexico Field Office Administration team. Working closely with Finance & Accounting in headquarters (HQ F&A), the Regional Accounting Manager, and the Mexico Head of Office, s/he works to ensure the integrity of the Rainforest Alliance’s financial operations in all Mexican offices (Oaxaca, Durango). This position supervises one employee.

Responsibilties: 

Compliance and Controls:

  • Ensures finance-related compliance including coordinating with external accountants and auditors as needed to prepare and present the reports required by various government entities and local Board, in close coordination with HQ F&A and Regional Accounting Manager;
  • In coordination with Human Resources Representative, ensures payroll-related labor law compliance;
  • Adheres to government, local tax laws and New York office accounting and legal requirements;
  • Implements and monitors internal controls in accordance with HQ F&A and Mexican local policies, standards and best practices; and provides related training;
  • Maintains local authorities matrix; and
  • Holds signatory approval and powers of attorney as needed.

Banking

  • Administers local banking relationship(s);
  • Monitors office cash flow and coordinates with program personnel (administrators of programs and projects) to prepare monthly estimates of cash flow; and
  • Reviews bank reconciliations.

Payroll

  • In coordination with headquarters in New York (NY HQ), processes monthly payroll (in-house or through payroll company) in coordination with the local Human Resources Representative;
  • Prepares/reviews required payroll-related government reporting; ensures timely filing and payments; and
  • Maintains and secures accounting and payroll records.

General Accounting

  • Reviews and submits in a timely manner monthly field office accounting report (FOAR);
  • Maintains the local accounting system;
  • Ensures correct coding and recording of information;
  • Coordinates the preparation of project specific audits;
  • Responsible for reviewing and approving as appropriate: travel expense reports, invoices, payments, advances, and receivables;
  • Provides information as needed for the Rainforest Alliance parent company audit; and
  • Reviews and posts journal entries.

Budgeting

  • Prepares annual budget for the annual Mexico Board Meeting as well as required related financial statements;
  • In consultation with HQ F&A and Mexico Head of Office, prepares and monitors annual Mexican office(s) budget; and
  • Prepares periodic performance and forecast reports according to HQ F&A guidelines.

Financial Reporting

  • Prepares financial reports for a variety of internal and external purposes including local accounting reports, requests for reimbursement to donors, reports for HQ F&A; and
  • Prepares ad-hoc reports as needed.

Other

  • Administers all office-specific contracts;
  • Reviews local inventories and prepares depreciation schedules;
  • In coordination with NY HQ, administers local insurance (liability, auto, etc.) as needed;
  • In coordination with Regional IT Manager, administers local IT and manages IT related vendors;
  • Provides backup to other Field Office Accountants and Regional Accounting Manager as needed; and
  • Other duties as assigned.   

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervises one employee;
  • Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; and
  • Coordinates with consultants on agreement scope of work and subsequent deliverables.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent in Accounting or Finance;
  • 5-7 years relevant experience, non-profit sector experience a plus;
  • Demonstrated proficiency with accounting system software and Excel;
  • Detail, deadline and solution-oriented;
  • Strong analytical skills;
  • Effective oral and written communication skills;
  • Fluent in English, both written and verbal; and
  • Ability to work successfully with employees from diverse backgrounds. 
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
