Title: Science Systems Technicians (2 posts)

Location: Scientific Ship Systems Group, National Marine Facilities Sea Systems, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: The National Marine Facilities Sea Systems is responsible for the operation and management of two NERC owned Royal Research ships that provide the scientific platform to support the UK’s world-wide oceanographic research programme. 

We are seeking to appoint two Science Systems Technicians who will be responsible for the configuration, maintenance and operation of scientific systems permanently installed into the vessel, including (but not be limited to) computing and networking, acoustic instrumentation, communications, navigational systems, ocean/atmosphere measurement and sampling systems.

You will be required to work as part of the embarked technical and scientific teams to ensure the day to day achievement of science objectives, providing general support as required. It is essential that you have an HNC/HND in an engineering discipline or a degree in a related discipline, which may be supported by a recognized engineering apprenticeship. Strong practical and theoretical computing skills are required, allied to an innovative approach to problem solving. Ideally this should be shown by relevant experience in a technical support role. 

Experience in programming in ‘C’, with a knowledge of Linux, Visual Basic and / or C++ is desirable. You should be highly motivated, able to use your own initiative, possess excellent oral and communication skills and be able to work both independently and as part of a small team.

This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and the salary will be in the range of £26,180 to £29,410 per annum.

Sea time of up to 120 days per year is required for this role, which attracts a daily allowance.
