Oceana, a results oriented global non-profit dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans is seeking  a Portuguese-speaking Science Fellow to work on the Save the Oceans, Feed the World campaign. Oceana is an international policy advocacy organization for marine conservation and has approximately 135 staff located in six countries and a budget of approximately $20 million. 

 

Responsibilities Include:

  • Provide credible research and polished writing regarding global fisheries management, science and policy, in addition to other topics as needed. to work
  • Rapid preparation of accurate briefing notes, working with spreadsheets and scientific literature reviews.
  • May assist with making cold calls and cultivating relationships as part of their research.
  • Impeccable attention to detail and cross-cultural sensitivity in working with international collaborators.

Required qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Science, especially in Ecology, Marine Biology or Natural Resources
  • International or cross-cultural experience
  • Organized, proactive, attention to detail
  • Strong background in both communication and quantitative skills
  • Adaptable to changing plans in a dynamic work environment
  • Fluent Portuguese and English oral and written communication skills
  • Willingness to work in-person in our Washington DC office

 

Preferred but not required:

  • Brazilian cultural fluency
  • Comfort working independently in an office environment
  • Demonstrated interest in environmental conservation and poverty alleviation
  • Skill in French, Tagalog, Spanish

 

Fellowships are full-time for one year, with a possible second year depending on funding and performance. The successful candidate must be available for full-time work in Washington, DC.  If necessary, applicants must be able to procure their own visa in order to be eligible to work in the United States. Ideal start date is December 16, 2013.
