Rushes flower later in the year, as do many other wetland plants. The family Cyperaceae includes the genus Carex (True Sedges which flower early) but it also includes Spike-rushes, Cottongrasses and a host of other sedge-like plants. This course will concentrate on Rushes and these 'other Cyperaceae' looking at their vegetative and flowering features, and their choice of habitat. This will lead us to fascinating wetland habitats including calcerous marsh, rough pasture, fen and bog. Here we can also look at the other sedges, grasses and plants that accompany them.
The Malham Tarn area, famous for its diverse wetland habitats and beautiful scenery, is home to one third of Britain's Cyperaceae and to half of the Rushes.
