Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund are seeking an energetic and experienced director to oversee our operations in Rhode Island.  Clean Water Action is a national citizens’ organization working for clean, safe and affordable water, prevention of health-threatening pollution, creation of environmentally-safe jobs and businesses, and empowerment of people to make democracy work. Clean Water Action has nearly 1 million members nationally and over 40,000 in Rhode Island. Clean Water Fund provides research, education, organizing, and technical assistance to strengthen grassroots environmental efforts around the country, promoting the public interest on issues related to water, natural resources, health, and a healthy economy.  Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund work together on selected campaigns and programs.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Overall responsibility for leading and developing Clean Water’s organization in Rhode Island, including the following specific responsibilities:
  • Develop and implement fundraising prospects and plans (individual giving and grants) in coordination with national staff.
  • Oversee, and manage grants and other financial obligations.
  • Develop and oversee programs and campaigns, including legislative and electoral campaigns, community and coalition organizing, policy development, and research and education programs.  Provide direction to local and state campaigns. Work in partnership with national staff to implement local and state elements of national campaigns and programs.
  • Hire, train, supervise and develop program staff.
  • Provide program direction, develop canvass materials for distribution and for the web, and support field and phone canvass programs and staff. Work in partnership with Canvass
  • Directors and Supervisors to build strong canvass programs.
  • In partnership with regional and national financial staff, develop and oversee administrative and financial management systems, including donor lists, budgets and other financial management tools.
  • Provide leadership in progressive collaboration planning and campaigns.
  • Represent Clean Water in work with other organizations, public officials, funders and media.
  • Regular travel throughout Rhode Island and to occasional national gatherings.
Qualifications: 
  • Successful fundraising experience with foundations, major donors, and events.
  • Ability to provide strong strategic leadership to build and direct the organization and its programs.
  • Extensive experience in a role as a senior manager or organizer with an environmental or other non-profit organization. This could include experience as an Executive Director, Associate Director, Organizing Director, etc.
  • Proven ability to supervise, support and develop staff and volunteers.
  • Experience developing non-staff leadership bodies such as boards of directors, campaign or coalition steering committees.
  • Experience with issues, campaigns, and organizing.  Experience with one or more of the
  •  
  • following issue areas are highly desirable: water quality, water supply, environmental health and toxics, environmental justice, energy, public transportation, solid waste, and natural resource protection.  Experience with grassroots and coalition organizing and campaigns is highly desirable, as is experience with electoral campaigns.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills and computer literacy.
  • Proven strategic planning and operational management skills, including the ability to manage diverse projects and personnel, budgets and multiple priorities.
  • Experience with professional canvass programs, electoral campaigns, legislative lobbying is highly desirable.
