Description

Description: A vacancy has arisen in the Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Group for a Research Scientist or Research Assistant (depending upon experience) to work within a team on a newly funded EU project. The scientific goal is to further our understanding of pigment signatures and phytoplankton community structure in the Bay of Biscay and their relation to ocean colour measurements from satellites. The primary task will be to maintain an automated robotic sampler on the Portsmouth to Bilbao ferry, making weekly visits to the ship for the collection of samples and then carrying out the analysis by liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (HPLC) and species identification/quantification using microscopy and flow cytometry. Documentation and interpretation of results will be part of your duties and you will be an active member of the scientific team.

It is essential that you have a degree in Oceanography, Marine biology, or Chemistry, an aptitude for practical tasks and knowledge/experience in phytoplankton identification by microscope. Experience of flow cytometry and HPLC would be an advantage. The project requires a broad range of technical skills and training will be provided. In particular, your written and verbal communication skills need to be strong and it will be necessary for you to sail on the vessel for period of 3 or more days at a time.

The Research Scientist position will require an individual to possess post graduate experience and to interpret data, write papers and carry out presentations; the Research Assistant position will require an individual to work up data and help with interpretation.

Benefits include RCUK pension scheme and up 30 days leave and 10 ½ public/privilege days.
