Research Officer

• Full time: 35 hours per week
• Duration: One-year fixed-term contract
BirdLife International is the world’s largest nature conservation partnership. Through our unique local-to-global approach, we deliver high impact and long-term conservation for the benefit of nature and people.
We are looking for someone to implement the research component of a project aiming to: (a) assess the scope and scale of illegal killing and hunting of birds in the Mediterranean; and (b) develop best-practice protocols for systematic monitoring of illegal killing and hunting of birds.
This person will work with individual BirdLife Partners to review and compile high level information on what comprises illegal killing of birds in each country; compile existing and new information on the species, numbers of individuals, black spots, and practices used in illegal killing and hunting of birds, and assess which species may be suffering greatest impacts; develop best practice monitoring protocols; and communicate results through targeted communications and advocacy materials and efforts. This will require an analytical approach combined with pragmatism in order to maximise the quantity and quality of data compiled, and the inferences that can be drawn given uncertainty associated with the nature of the data.
The ideal candidate will have:
• A Masters degree or higher in a relevant subject, or equivalent demonstrable skills and experience gained in an appropriate field
• Good general knowledge of Western Palearctic bird species
• Familiarity with international conservation issues
• Excellent organisation skills and the ability to coordinate a range of activities and prioritise workload effectively
• Excellent communication skills including the ability to develop relationships with collaborators from a wide range of cultural backgrounds
• Language skills relevant to the Mediterranean region would also be beneficial
