SEI Oxford is looking for an early- to mid-career researcher to join our team. The researcher would contribute to SEI’s work on emerging topics in climate policy, focusing on, among others, the interface of climate change and international trade, and the governance of fossil fuel subsidies and their reform. This work would take place in the context of SEI’s Initiative on Fossil Fuels and Climate Change. Other topics that the candidate may be expected to work on relate to the ongoing negotiations on implementing the Paris Agreement, climate finance and carbon pricing, and EU climate and energy policy.

The candidate is expected to be capable of working both independently and in a team in a highly flexible and exciting global research environment.

Primary responsibilities

  • Gathering information and data, through literature research, internet and interviews
  • Drafting reports, journal articles, policy briefs, and blog posts
  • Preparing proposals and helping with fundraising
  • Carrying out external presentations and other outreach
  • Organizing events for outreach
  • Coordinating work with project partners
  • Participating actively in our collaborative institute culture

Requirements

The successful candidate would:

  • Have an advanced degree or at least 3 years of equivalent experience in law, public policy, political science or a closely related social science discipline, with a clear specialization in climate change policy
  • Have a strong understanding of the international regime governing climate change, and at least a basic understanding of international trade agreements
  • Have a sound understanding of climate change mitigation and energy questions
  • Be comfortable working in both scientific and policy communities
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Speak and write fluent English; knowledge of another language is beneficial
  • Have excellent writing skills
  • Be a dynamic networker who is comfortable with travelling
  • Be able to work independently
  • Have a sense of collegiality and the ability to work collaboratively with both internal and external colleagues.
