Position Title: Research Assistant I 100% time

Job responsibilities and type of work:
This is a 100% time position providing technical support for agroecology research.
Responsibilities are to oversee and carry out laboratory analyses, and assist with field
measurements as required (50%), to assist in the planning and carrying out of
research experiments and activities (30%), and to assist with data organization and
statistical analysis under direction of a researcher (20%). Lab responsibilities include
analysis of soil solution and extracts, sample preparation of soil and plant material,
soil analysis for particulate organic matter, automated analysis for trace gases and
microbial assays. Field work will include sampling of soils, plants, gases and soil
solution, and maintenance of grain and cover crops for field treatments. Good
communication and statistical skills are important. This is a one-year end-dated
position. Specifically, responsibilities include:
• Carry out research laboratory procedures, conduct soil and plant analysis
• Maintain field experiments and assist with field monitoring, including plant and
soil sampling.
• Operate, maintain and monitor research instruments and equipment in the
laboratory.
• Maintain data, methods and records of experimental procedures and evaluation of
experiments, and ensure compliance with safety guidelines.
• Order and organize supplies and equipment in order to maintain inventories.
• Carry out statistical analysis as requested.
Education and experience desired: Requires a BSc in ecology, horticulture, agronomy,
soil science, biology, natural resources or a related field. Laboratory experience in
carrying out plant biology and soil science research is important, as is excellent
communication and organizational skills.
