The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS), the nation’s largest animal advocacy organization, is seeking a Ranch Hand I in the primate department for its Cleveland Amory Black Beauty Ranch. Commitment to the goals and programs of the HSUS along with the highest quality animal care skills required.  Must have the ability to follow directions and record observations; communicate with other staff members and supervisors; identify changes in animal behavior or medical status.  Minimum 2 years experience working with primates (chimpanzee experience a plus) and Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in biology, zoology, or similar field preferred.   This position involves substantial animal husbandry responsibilities, limited basic medical work, and some administrative duties (record keeping).  Day-to-day responsibilities include feeding, cleaning enclosures, monitoring behavior, enclosure maintenance and enrichment activities.  Ranch Hands also work with and mentor interns.  This position involves substantial physical labor (must be able to lift 50 pounds) in all types of outdoor conditions.  Proof of negative TB test is required. Tetanus and Rabies pre-exposure vaccinations are recommended.  Desired candidates are mature individuals with the ability to handle physically and emotionally stressful situations, a demanding work load and long hours, and work independently or as a team.
