Job Title: ‘Springs of Rivers’ Project Officer (River Teme)

Location: Teme Catchment, office based around Worcester

Duration: Initial one year contract (with possible extension of a further four years subject to funding)

Salary Grade: £25,000

This is a new and exciting opportunity to work with the Severn Rivers Trust (SRT) to help restore an iconic river catchment. The River Teme/Afon Tefeidiad is one of the best sandstone and mudstone rivers in Britain, supporting a diverse range of plants, insects, mammals and fish, including salmon, twaite shad, otter, native crayfish, lampreys and bullhead. In recognition of its ecological value, the river has been designated as a nationally important Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and internationally significant, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) due to a rare and special population of fresh water pearl mussel.

SRT is seeking a Project Officer with experience in delivering physical river and catchment enhancement work and the ability to lead and train apprentices and volunteers to help improve the river’s ecology. The Project Officer will be responsible in the first year for assisting in the development phase of a natural Heritage Lottery Fund project to help secure funding for a further four years for the delivery phase. This will include completing walkover surveys, mapping invasive species, assessing access opportunities, compiling riparian management designs in association with landowners and interest groups, obtaining consents and liaising with partners and stakeholders.

In the delivery phase (further 4 years dependant on secured funding) the role will involve mentoring and overseeing four apprentice river trainees each year and leading and delivering on the aforementioned riparian management plans consisting of a suite of river enhancement techniques including invasive species removal, river habitat enhancement, riparian management and commissioning and working with contractors as appropriate.

You will be a self-starter and demonstrate a committed, mature and flexible approach to your work. We are looking for an individual with significant practical conservation, river restoration and project management experience. You will have excellent organisational, communication and reporting skills and have the proven ability to work with a wide range of partners including volunteers, farmers, landowners and others. Knowledge and experience of practical river conservation work, the Catchment Based Approach and land management issues, the Water Framework Directive and invasive non-native species are essential.

Initially offered as a fixed term contract until 1st November 2016, it is hoped this will be extended for a further 4 years subject to satisfactory performance and funding being secured. This is an exciting opportunity to become part of the growing Severn Rivers Trust and to make a real difference to river environments in the Teme Catchment.

The Severn Rivers Trust is an independent environmental charity established to secure the preservation, protection, development and improvement of the rivers, streams, watercourses and water bodies in the Severn catchment, and to advance the education of the public in the management of water and the wider environment. If you believe that you have the passion, commitment and skills to take this unique opportunity forward then we would like to hear from you.
