The Landscapes Intern will provide research and programmatic support to AWF’s Program Design and Government Relations Unit. She/he will work under the direction of the Director Program Design Europe and the Conservation Strategy and Issues Analyst (CSIA) to carry out desktop research and analysis, which will inform AWF’s landscapes approach. AWF’s landscapes approach is a set of concepts and tools which support the integrated management of land to achieve environmental, social and economic gains in selected regions in Africa. AWF is examining the relevance of its landscape approach to the Modern Africa agenda in order to enhance its performance as a means of delivering on the goal of ensuring that wildlife and wild lands are a part of Africa’s development agenda. The Landscapes Intern will therefore need to be able to research and analyse a broad suite of issues.  She/he will also support environmental governance work at AWF with respect to information management, environmental impact assessment analysis, and stakeholder coordination.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct desktop research and analysis on agendas and economic sectors relevant to landscape management in Africa. Agendas and sectors will include but may not be limited to the following: agriculture, infrastructure, extractives, energy, infrastructure, climate change, security, urban sustainability, restoration, and natural capital.  
  • Collate and analyse AWF knowledge and data with regards to its experience in landscape management
  • Prepare knowledge briefs based on research and analysis, and any relevant visual aids which summarise information
  • Support the CSIA with information management, analysis, and stakeholder coordination with regards to AWF’s environmental governance work

Requirements

  • Kenyan citizen or foreign resident with right to work in Kenya
  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Excellent English writing skills
  • Capacity to work with a diverse team and engage external stakeholders
  • Ability to work proactively in research and analysis
  • Diverse educational background with experience in environmental and social sciences
  • An ability to develop various types of graphs, charts and infographics is desirable.
  • Experience in environmental governance is desirable.
