Responsibilities
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations system’s designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Division of Regional Cooperation (DRC) helps to implement UNEP’s global programs in the regions by initiating, coordinating and catalyzing regional and sub-regional cooperation and action in response to environmental problems and emergencies. This position is located in the UNEP/DRC, Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) at the Bahrain Duty Station. Under the guidance of the Regional Director and the supervision of the Deputy Regional Director, the incumbent will: 1. Coordinate and implement regional outreach activities: (i) Identify appropriate outreach activities to enhance UNEP’s image in the region; (ii) Oversee the World Environment Day celebrations in the region and provide support to other major UN Days 2. Ensure the inclusion of Major Groups and Stakeholders from the region in international activities: (i) Build and maintain networks with UNEP National Committees, various constituency groups and Civil Society networks in the region, including NGOs, women’s groups, children and youth. (ii) Identify and organize regional activities to prepare regional platforms for global activities, including the annual Regional Civil Society Consultation. (iii) Maintain a close liaison with the relevant divisions at HQs (DRC and Division of Communication and Public Information (DCPI). 3. Develop and implement the regional communication strategy: (i) Prepare and disseminate regular press releases; (ii) Develop media relations; (iii) Promote and disseminate UNEP activities in the region and beyond. 4. Work with the Council of Arab Ministers Responsible for the Environment (CAMRE), governments and relevant regional organizations in the development of an education and outreach programme: (i) Identify relevant programmes themes, e.g., sustainable consumption and production; (ii) Prepare proposals and identify suitable donors to fund implementation of such programmes. 5. Act as the Regional Office for West Asia (ROWA) Focal Point for Youth and Children’s events, e.g., TUNZA, Children’s Painting Competition, etc. 6. Carry out such other activities as are necessary to advance UNEP’s mandate in the field of information dissemination, including assisting in fundraising, development of papers, presentations and outreach material.

Demonstrated ability to research and rapidly analyze and integrate diverse information from varied media sources. Communication: Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; Ability to draft proposals, press releases, papers presentation and outreach materials; Demonstrates openness in sharing information and keeping people informed. Planning and organizing: Ability to develop clear goals for the outreach activities, foresee risks and allow for contingency plans. Ability to coordinate the work of others, work to tight deadlines and handle multiple concurrent projects/activities. Teamwork: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic environment with sensitivity and respect for diversity. Demonstrated by the ability to lead and gain assistance and cooperation of others in a team endeavour.



QUALIFICATIONS

Education
Advanced University degree in media or the environment or other relevant field, or a first university degree with a relevant combination of professional and academic qualifications.

Work Experience
Five years of professional experience in the media dealing with environmental and development related issues, 3 years of which should be at the international level. Experience in programming and good understanding of environmental institutions and international environmental programmes and intergovernmental process an asset.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the advertised post, fluency in oral and written English and Arabic required. Knowledge of another official UN language desirable. Ability to carry out translation an asset.

Other Skills
Experience in organizing fund raising strategies, youth events, preparing special UN days celebrations such as World Environment Day among others. Proven ability to build and maintain effective networks.
