|
The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of governments and the international community for action. UNEP’s Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) works with international and national partners, providing technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy, and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and countries with economies in transition. This post is located in UNEP/DEPI at the Geneva duty station. Under the general supervision of the Director, DEPI, the incumbent will carry out the following duties:

Responsibilities
|
|
|
|
Design and conduct field missions to assess opportunities for environmental diplomacy in a peace-building context and to develop implementation plans for environmental diplomacy interventions; Organize and implement environmental diplomacy interventions based on approved work-plan; Evaluate, monitor and ensure follow-up actions on initiated programmes/projects; Expand existing partnerships with UN agencies to provide technical expertise on how shared natural resources or common environmental threats can be used for dialogue, confidence building and cooperation between divided groups or countries; Organize and implement training programmes on best practice in the application of environmental diplomacy in a conflict management and peace-building context; Develop and manage a roster of senior environmental diplomacy experts for field deployment to conflict affected countries and fragile states; Conduct evaluations of assigned programmes/projects; Monitor and analyze programme/project development and implementation; Review documents and reports; Identify problems and issues to be addressed and initiate corrective actions; Liaise with relevant parties; Ensure follow-up actions; Participate in policy development, the review and analysis of issues and trends, preparation of impact evaluation or equivalent studies, organize and prepare other written outputs; Coordinate activities related to budget funding (programme/project preparation and submissions, progress reports and financial statements) and prepare documents/reports; Perform other duties as required.

Education
|
|
|
|
Advanced university degree (Master’s degree or equivalent) in business administration, management, economics or a related field. A first-level university degree in combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university degree.
|
|

Work Experience
|
|
|
|
A minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in project or programme management, administration or related area.
|
|
|
|
Languages
|
|
|
|
Fluency in one of the working languages of the UN Secretariat, English or French, (both oral and written) is required; knowledge of the other is desirable. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.
|
|
|
|
Assessment
|
|
|
|
Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
|
|
