Environment Conservation Program  

 

The Foundation’s Environmental Conservation Program (ECP) aims at changing the ways in which people use terrestrial, freshwater and coastal marine ecosystems to conserve critical ecological systems and functions, while allowing sustainable use.

We focus our efforts on long-term support of a small number of initiatives and program grants that pursue measurable conservation outcomes on a broad scale.

The Position  

 

The Program Manager position has been created to provide leverage to the Chief Program Officer by translating the strategic priorities of the Environmental Conservation Program into an integrated operational agenda.  The Program Manager will be accountable for enabling effective program operations, and enhancing the connections between these operations and central support (SSA) teams.  The Program Manager will report to the Chief Program Officer and liaise with team members within the Program and with SSA teams such as Legal, Grants Administration, Human Resources, Strategy and Communications.   As such, the role requires a highly developed ability to develop effective organizational linkages in a non-hierarchical way. 

 

Key Responsibilities  

 

The Program Manager will: 

  • Identify and expand ways to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of the CPO with particular attention to ensuring clarity and timely execution of the integrated operational agenda.   
  • Proactively identify and implement (working with the CPO, the ECP Program Directors and others, both within and outside the Program) approaches and tools that improve the effectiveness, efficiency and cohesiveness of the Program team.  Conversely promptly help identify and resolve issues that impair efficiency of program operations. 
  • Identify approaches and activities that free up the CPO to maximize their time on internal and external influence/impact. 
  • Working with the COO and Chief of Staff / Head of Strategy, ensure effective relationships (and resulting actions) between the Program team and the SSA teams for effective, efficient, timely execution of Program strategy. 
  • Collaboratively manage the internal operational aspects of the Program including budget projection and monitoring, grants flow, staffing issues, and other aspects that affect Program effectiveness and efficiency. 
  • Collaboratively manage operational aspects of strategic issues and external relationships such as Program Advisory Committees, Boards, consultants, and other key relationships 

 

Experience and Education  

 

The candidate will have: 

  • A Bachelor’s degree and  4 + years relevant work experience  
  • A graduate degree such as an MBA preferred  
  • Experience with environmental or sustainability issues preferred  
  • Experience with complex project management essential 
  • Experience working in matrix team environments (i.e., within and across teams) 

 

Competencies and Attributes  

 

The ideal candidate also will have: 

  • The ability to view the big picture and long-term goals while focusing on  tactical short-term details  
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills including the ability to work collaboratively with all levels of staff and interface with senior leaders  
  • Exceptional communication skills including speaking, writing, listening and meeting facilitation  
  • An ability to develop approaches to enhance internal communications 
  • A flexible and positive approach to problem solving in a collaborative team environment; comfort with ambiguity 
  • Highly developed organizational capability  
  • A creative approach to problem solving 
  • Excellent, well-developed project management skills 
  • Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple time-sensitive tasks 
  • Strong computer skills, specifically in Excel and PowerPoint (experience with project management software or methodologies a plus) 

A demonstrated  interest in the nonprofit and/or philanthropic sector preferred
