Earthwatch Institute is an international environmental non-profit organization which supports around 80 field research projects in over 35 countries. The International Research team at Earthwatch develops and supports field research projects in collaboration with a wide range of external scientists and other stakeholders.

Position Summary

The Research Coordinator is responsible for the processing and tracking of research proposals from first contact through the development process, peer review, fielding of research projects, and reporting of research results. This position supports the outreach efforts of the International Research Department by developing, maintaining, and distributing research project information including impacts, outputs, and outcomes. This position works closely with Research Department colleagues in our international offices, as well as cross departmentally to ensure project development and support is completed in a timely manner. The Research Coordinator will report to the Research Program Manager and be based in Boston, MA.

Responsibilities

Administrative support for the Research Department

  • Maintains and enters research department data and lists in proprietary database (Athena)
  • Responsible for running reports from database
  • Point person for the department; liaise to other departments, affiliate offices, partners and Earthwatch scientists. Organize and manage folders on Server.

Manage Research Project Proposal Process

  • Work closely with Inventory management team to coordinate the portfolio of research projects
  • Manage the forms and processes to ensure efficient delivery of project outcomes and successful scientist stewardship
  • Respond, track, and coordinate inquiries, concept notes, and proposals requesting funding
  • Manage and coordinate the project assessment (PAT) process for all research proposals
  • Manage and coordinate research renewal process for existing projects
  • Research and solicit appropriate peer reviewers for projects, providing support and information as needed and following up with deadlines and requests
  • Maintain research standards in affiliate offices through staff training sessions

Project recruitment

  • Assist with outreach strategy by developing contacts and lists of institutions and organizations that could help identify potential researchers
  • Assist with updating the regional analysis of research projects to assist with strategic analysis of programmatic needs

Database manager, Monitoring, evaluation, and reporting

  • Develop, manage, and maintain the MS Access database that houses all the information related to research project outputs including organizational Measures of Success
  • Support the implementation of organizational Measures of Success for research projects.
  • Support completion of output reports for research projects and initiatives

Programmatic initiatives

  • Support initiatives to secure funding for research projects and programs
  • Support general communication, including input for research web pages, production of posters, annual lecture series, and input to specific position papers
  • Support management of budgets, logistics, and administration of program delivery for selected funded programs

Intern Program Management

  • Support hiring and supervision of 6-8 interns annually to contribute to key research department objectives

Support to International Director of Research (IDR)

  • Support development of external and internal communication from IDR
  • Support planning and other tasks associated with department
  • Support the IDR in organizing and coordinating internal and external meetings, including planning, scheduling, travel arrangements, and expense reporting

 

Skills/Qualifications/Experience:

  • BA/BS degree; science related field a plus
  • Strong project management skills
  • Excellent information management and computer skills including MS Excel, MS Access, and Adobe Acrobat Pro
  • Proven record of strong administrative and organizational skills, with the ability to work collaboratively, multi-task, and prioritize assignments
  • Strong oral and written communication skills; comfortable corresponding with senior scientists
  • Demonstrated flexibility, initiative, resourcefulness, the ability to maintain composure in a fast paced non-profit environment and sense of humor required
  • Ability to follow directives when needed and to be self-sufficient in accomplishing such directives
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using internet research resources
  • Work experience as project coordinator or manager in non-profit or academic setting preferred
  • Interest in field science preferred

Compensation:  30-35K, commensurate with experience.  Good benefits
