Job title: Principal Scientific Services Officer

 Location: London, Barnet

 Rate: £34,000 - £37,000 + Car allowance

 Term: Part Time Fixed Term contract of 9 months to 1 year.

 Job Summary:

 Our Client is seeking a Principal Scientific Services Officer to work with the London Borough of Barnet to support the existing Environmental Health Management Team. You will have the opportunity to provide planning related advice on Contaminated Land, Air quality and Noise as well as dealing with a regular case load involving commercial nuisance complaints and responding to service requests such as contaminated land enquiries.

 

This is a part time contract (3 or 4 days a week) for a period of between 9 months and 1 year depending on when the post is appointed.

Responsibilities / Accountabilities:

 

Key responsibilities of the role are:

  • Provision of planning related advice on Contaminated Land, Air quality and Noise issues within the Borough
  • Resolution of commercial nuisance complaints and responding to service requests such as contaminated land enquiries.
  • Play a key role in the line management and training of team members, providing professional and technical Environmental Health services
  • Undertake investigations of service requests, contraventions of legislation, appeals, risk or other circumstances within the general purview of the Section
  • Provide evidence at legal proceedings and other quasi-judicial hearings
  • Assist in the development of changes in procedures, systems and operational strategies to maintain efficiency and effectiveness
  • Lead on the GLA Air quality projects and manage the team’s Air quality Champion.

Requirements (Essential)

 

  • Relevant Degree or Diploma in Acoustics, Contaminated Land or Pollution Control
  • Experience in dealing with complex Public Health matters, including, Statutory Nuisance, Contaminated Land, Air Pollution and prescribed processes
  • Competent user of Microsoft Office specifically Word, Excel, PowerPoint
  • Current UK driving licence and provision of own vehicle whilst on Council business
  • Ability to communicate with people in a friendly and courteous manner, establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels
  • Good organisational skills, including the ability to progress numerous initiatives and actions simultaneously
  • Ability to work well as part of a team but also independently using own initiative
  • Demonstrate enthusiasm, confidence and a flexible approach to work.
