POSITION SUMMARY

The Prairie Recovery Specialist will work to accelerate implementation of grassland management and restoration on state and federally owned conservation lands and select privately owned permanently protected lands. The position will be based out of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Wetland Management District office in Morris, Minnesota. This is a full-time position with competitive benefits package.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Prairie Recovery Specialist (PRS) works closely with public agency partners to develop, manage, and advance conservation programs, plans and methods for small-scale ecoregions. The PRS provides technical leadership and support to the Minnesota/North Dakota/South Dakota Chapter. This may include one or more of the following functions:

  • Design and implement prairie enhancement and restoration projects in coordination with federal and state partners.

  • Coordinate with private contractors, seasonal habitat staff and Conservation Corps of MN crews to implement land management activities including prescribed fire, woody removal, invasive species treatment and conservation grazing.

  • Assess the effectiveness of land management practices in meeting conservation objectives as determined by Conservancy science staff; adapt and revise practices as needed.

  • Promote prairie conservation practices to landowners including possible sale for Federal, State and Private conservation programs.

  • Develop/manage annual budgets to plan and complete conservation activities.

  • Prepare, negotiate and execute contracts with vendors.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Performs tasks with minimal supervision and makes independent decisions based on analysis, experience, and context.

  • Supervises administrative and professional staff with responsibility for performance management, training and development.

  • Plans and directs grassland management programs and stewardship in cooperation with partners.

  • Addresses critical threats to natural systems and individual species.

  • Develops and implements conservation strategies.

  • Works with local agricultural producers to implement conservation grazing systems in cooperation with various partners.

  • Maintain and enhance invasive species management techniques.

  • Financial responsibility includes working within a budget to complete projects, negotiating and contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget development.

  • Ensures program compliance with internal policies and external requirements.

  • May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree and 3 years’ experience in natural resource management or similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Experience training and managing staff or volunteers.

  • Experience using common software applications such as Word, Excel, web browsers, etc.

  • Must have valid driver's license and good driving record.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural experience appreciated.

  • 3-5 years’ experience in natural resource management, similar field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Ability and willingness to apply science to decision-making and guide activities.

  • Relationship building skills to work closely with a variety of partners, i.e. government officials, internal scientists, media.

  • Knowledge of ecological land management principles.

  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in conservation, land management and natural resource preservation.

  • Experience with GIS software and technology.

  • Familiarity with principles of land acquisition or similar asset acquisition.

  • Experience completing tasks independently with respect to timeline(s).

  • Excellent communication skills via written, spoken and graphical means in English.
