Purpose of job
- To provide scientific and technical support to the Defra Plant Health policy teams, Fera Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate, other Fera teams and stakeholders on interceptions and outbreaks of quarantine non-native plant pests and pathogens.
- To provide scientific and technical support with the assessment of applications to work with quarantine plant pests and pathogens and on the release of non-native biological control agents
The post holder will
- Provide scientific advice and recommendations to the Plant Health and Seeds Inspectorate (PHSI) on actions to be taken when non-native plant pests and pathogens are detected on imported produce or plants.
- Provide scientific advice and recommendations to the PHSI and Defra plant health policy on the eradication of populations of non-native plant pests and pathogens. This will include visiting outbreak sites in the UK.
- Liaise with the Chemical Regulation Directorate to obtain appropriate pesticide approvals.
- Provide support for the assessment of applications to import and work with quarantine plant pests and pathogens and on applications to release non-native biological control agents.
- Gather, analyse, interpret and summarise biological and other information from a wide variety of sources.
- Collaborate with colleagues on relevant plant health publicity material and other publications.
- Manage electronic data on the Fera Plant Health Information Warehouse.
- Provide support to the submission and delivery of projects.
