Purpose of job

This job is for a plant pathologist/entomologist seeking to become a consultant in the Diagnosis and Advice team of the Plant Protection Programme. The main function of this post is to assess the risks from plant pests and pathogens to UK crops, trees and other plants, using PRA techniques, and subsequently to provide evidence-based scientific advice, guidance and consultancy to Defra.  The post will also contribute to PRA related research activities.

 The post holder will:

 

  • compile and summarise biological and other information, e.g. economic impacts and trade data, from a wide variety of sources that are needed to assess the risks posed by pests and pathogens of crops, trees and other plants;
  • analyse the information obtained to produce PRAs and datasheets for plant pests and pathogens using expert judgment and quantitative analysis as appropriate
  • contribute to the UK plant health risk register;
  • compile lists of domestic and overseas plant pests and pathogens, and identify associated risks to support the export and import of horticultural, agricultural and energy crops;
  • maintain the team’s awareness of emerging plant pest and pathogen problems overseas which may have an impact on plants in this country or Europe, ensuring that such information is circulated to those concerned and acted on appropriately (including summary document preparation);
  • contribute to the development of the PRA process;
  • develop links with PRA workers overseas and other relevant experts in universities, government and other research institutes in the UK and worldwide;
  • undertake other work within the wider remit of the Diagnosis and Advice team
