Purpose of job
To ensure delivery of a diagnostic service to UK Government and industry customers
To strengthen, rationalise and develop Fera’s commercial testing service
To Support the 100% increase in commercial testing income over 5 years
The Plant Clinic Manager will work closely with and be supported by other senior scientists within the Diagnosis & Advice Team and report directly to the Team Leader
The post holder will
Ensure effective delivery of diagnostic services through good staff management and communication with other staff within the Plant Protection Programme ; provide effective management of a small team of diagnosticians and customer support staff
Provide leadership of the Plant Clinic, providing and delivering an industry-focussed portfolio of testing services
Be aware of customer requirements and work together to ensure that these are met.
Ensure that regular discussions take place, to cover issues relating to performance standards including quality monitoring. Through these discussions work to achieve consistency across the team
Take responsibility for planning the effective delivery having regard to the impact of your decisions and actions on the wider team.
Act as part of a coordinated management team, discuss priorities and plan work effectively to deliver business results
Assess team skills levels, identify training needs and arrange appropriate training to deliver current and future work.
Display enthusiasm and a positive approach around goals and activities and encourage others to do the same
Support the delivery of the commercial diagnostics 5-year business delivery plan and play an active role in the ongoing review and development of this plan;
Develop close relationships with existing customers, leading to greater uptake of Plant Clinic services; maintain a regular programme of contacts with key customers; take responsibility for a customer service strategy;
Working with senior scientists within the team, support the development of new business across the agri-food chain, including agricultural and horticultural industry, both in the UK and internationally
Be responsible for Plant Clinic income and expenditure, reporting performance to Team Leader; meeting target savings through Continuous Improvement processes;
