Purpose of job

The Plant Bacteriology Diagnostician will oversee and contribute to the diagnosis processes, from reception of plants, seeds and related plant material to final reports to customers. They will work within the Bacteriology discipline and liaise with specialists within the Plant Clinic, and with the Customer Services Team, where appropriate. The job will entail carrying out diagnosis of bacterial plant pathogenic diseases, using a range of traditional methods such as isolation and host pathogenicity tests, and more modern techniques such as molecular methods and fatty acid profiling, using standard operating procedures and taking direction from senior colleagues.

 The post holder will:

Work with quarantine and listed organisms as well as non-quarantine plant pathogens;

Manage daily workflow to ensure:

  • Plant samples that are received are examined and appropriately dealt with and tests are setup;
  • Customer phone, fax, e-mail enquiries are dealt with effectively;
  • Customers are kept informed of the progress of the diagnosis;
  • Final reports are written, authorised and issued;
  • Customer feedback is captured and managed appropriately;

Prepare and deliver talks, presentations and training to visitors, colleagues or external customers
